How to Choose a Driveway Contractor in Manchester: What to Look For

Choosing the wrong driveway contractor is one of the most expensive mistakes a Manchester homeowner can make. Our guide tells you exactly what to look for, what questions to ask, and which warning signs to take seriously.

Why Contractor Choice Matters So Much

A new driveway is a significant investment — typically £5,000–£12,000 for a medium-sized front drive in Manchester. The quality of the finished result depends far more on the contractor's skill and integrity than on the materials specified. A premium block paving specification installed by an inexperienced or dishonest contractor will fail; a straightforward tarmac installation done properly by an experienced local firm will last 25 years.

Unfortunately, the driveway industry attracts a disproportionate number of rogue traders — from doorstep sellers using pressure tactics and cheap materials, to businesses that take large deposits and disappear. Knowing how to distinguish a reputable contractor from a rogue one is essential before you commit to any driveway project.

Check Trading History and Local Reputation

Length of trading: How long has the company been operating? A firm that has been trading successfully for 10, 20 or 50 years has a demonstrated track record. Rogue traders frequently operate under new company names after accumulating complaints.

Local presence: Is the contractor genuinely local? Do they have a local telephone number, a permanent business address (not a PO Box), and a website that reflects a local business? Local contractors have a reputational stake in the quality of their work — they live and work in the same community as you.

Online reviews: Check Google reviews, Checkatrade, Trustpilot and similar platforms. Look for volume of reviews, recency, and how the company responds to any negative feedback. Be cautious of companies with only a handful of very recent reviews.

Dalys Driveways has been trading in Altrincham since 1969 — over 55 years. Our reputation is built on generations of quality work across Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

The Quotation Process

A reputable contractor will always: - Visit your property in person before providing a written quote - Provide a detailed written quotation specifying materials, depths, drainage approach and included works - Give you time to consider without pressure - Not ask for more than a reasonable deposit (typically 10–25%)

Red flags in the quotation process: - Verbal quotes only — no written specification means no accountability for what was agreed - Dramatically low price — if a quote is significantly cheaper than others, ask why. It almost always reflects skimped groundworks or inferior materials - Pressure to sign immediately — "this price is only available today" is a classic rogue trader tactic - Large upfront payment required — never pay more than 25% before work starts, and never pay in full before completion - Unsolicited doorstep approach — reputable contractors don't cold-call; they rely on referrals and marketing

Technical Questions to Ask

Ask every potential contractor these specific questions and judge the quality of their answers:

"How deep will you excavate?" — A proper driveway requires 200–300mm excavation depth. Vague answers or "just a few inches" are concerning.

"What sub-base material will you use and to what depth?" — Correct answer: compacted Type 1 MOT crushed limestone, minimum 150mm (often more). An experienced contractor will specify this without hesitation.

"What block/aggregate/resin system will you use?" — They should name the manufacturer. For block paving: Marshalls, Brett, Tobermore or similar. For resin: a named UV-stable system.

"What guarantee do you provide?" — Understand what the guarantee covers and for how long. A guarantee is only as good as the company standing behind it — check they're likely to still be trading.

"Can I visit a recent project or speak to a previous customer?" — A confident contractor will say yes. A hesitant or evasive answer tells you something.

Insurance and Accreditation

Public liability insurance: Any contractor working on your property should carry public liability insurance (minimum £2 million, ideally £5 million or more). Ask to see the certificate. If a contractor or their employees cause damage to your property, a neighbour's property, or are injured on your site, you need to know they have adequate insurance in place.

VAT registration: Larger, established contractors will be VAT registered. If a contractor insists on cash-only payment and can't provide a VAT receipt, this should prompt questions.

Contractor accreditation: Look for membership of the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI), the Interlay block paving accreditation scheme, or similar professional bodies. These aren't guarantees of quality, but membership indicates a degree of professional commitment.

Getting and Comparing Quotes

Always obtain at least 2–3 quotes from different contractors. When comparing quotes:

- Ensure each quote is for the same specification — same materials, same depth, same included works - Don't automatically choose the cheapest — understand why it's cheaper - Ask clarifying questions about anything you don't understand - Check that waste removal is included (skip hire or grab lorry) - Confirm the programme — how many days will the work take?

If one quote is significantly lower than others, ask the contractor to walk you through exactly how they're achieving the saving. If the answer is a thinner sub-base, less excavation or cheaper materials, walk away. If it's genuinely better buying power or efficiency, that's different.
